How to Play Carcassonne

Turn Sequence

1. Place a tile: Draw one landscape tile and place it adjacent to at least one existing tile so that all touching edges match (road to road, city to city, field to field, river to river).

2. Deploy a figure (optional): Place one figure from your supply onto a feature on the tile you just placed. You may only place a follower (normal or Large Meeple) if that connected road, city, cloister, or field contains no other followers.

3. Score completed features: Any roads, cities, or cloisters completed by the tile are scored immediately and all figures on them return to their owners' supplies.

Scoring & Majority

β€’ Roads: 1 point per tile (both during the game and at final scoring).
β€’ Cities: 2 points per tile and +2 per coat-of-arms pennant when completed; 1 point per tile and pennant if incomplete at game end.
β€’ Cloisters (Monasteries): 9 points when surrounded by all 8 neighbouring tiles; 1 point per tile in the 3Γ—3 grid if incomplete at game end.
β€’ Fields (Farmers): Scored only at game end β€” 3 points per completed city bordering the field. Farmers remain on the board for the entire game.
β€’ Shared Features: When separate features merge, the player with the most follower weight wins full points; in a tie, all tied players receive full points.

Expansions

β€’ The River (12 tiles): Laid first from the mountain spring to the lake. River tiles must continue the river and cannot bend in the same direction twice in a row.

β€’ Inns & Cathedrals (18 tiles): Each player receives 1 Large Meeple (counts as 2 followers for majority). A completed road with an Inn scores 2 points per tile, or 0 points if unfinished at game end. A completed city with a Cathedral scores 3 points per tile and pennant, or 0 points if unfinished at game end.

β€’ Traders & Builders (24 tiles):
β€” Trade Goods (🍷 Wine, 🌾 Grain, 🧡 Cloth): Completing a city with trade good symbols awards those tokens to the player who placed the completing tile (regardless of who owns the city). At game end, the player(s) with the most of each good score 10 points.
β€” Builder: May be placed on a road or city where you already have a follower. Whenever you place a tile that extends or completes that road or city, you immediately take one bonus turn (max one bonus turn per turn). Returns when the feature completes.
β€” Pig: May be placed on a field where you already have a farmer. Increases your farmer scoring on that field from 3 to 4 points per completed city.
